PH 3/2 Table Lamp

Poul Henningsen, 1925-1926

Description

The PH 3/2 Table lamp features a three-shade system that directs most light downward, using mouth-blown, three-layer opal glass with a glossy top and matte underside for soft, diffused light. Originally designed for a Paris exhibition with Louis Poulsen, the lamp provides glare-free illumination and soft shadows.

The first shades were metal, but glass was later introduced for a more even light distribution. The design, based on a logarithmic spiral, reduces glare and shadows, with each shade equally dispersing light. The 3/2 model includes a 30 cm top shade with smaller lower shades from the 2/2 model.

Details

The fixture is designed based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system, which directs the majority of the light downwards. The shades are made of mouth-blown opal three-layer glass, which is glossy on top and sandblasted matt on the underside, giving a soft and diffused light distribution.

Poul Henningsen , 1925-1926

The very influential Danish designer, architect, writer, and cultural critic, Poul Henningsen (1894-1967), has had a huge impact on Danish thinking and design. His legacy is an integrated part of Louis Poulsen’s endeavor to shape light.

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen in 1894 as the son of the Danish writers Agnes Henningsen and Carl Ewald. He started practicing traditional functionalist architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting, which is what he is most famous for.
