Maarten Van Severen studied architecture at the Art Academy in Ghent before turning his focus to furniture design. He created his first pieces in 1986, and by the following year, he had set up his own workshop. This allowed him to design and produce furniture in a small-scale, semi-industrial manner. His approach emphasized a close connection between design and production, which became a core part of his work. He concentrated on creating fundamental furniture types—like chairs, tables, chaise lounges, and cabinets—striving for simplicity and functionality through a thorough exploration of form, material, and construction.
