Description
The story of Shinohara’s exquisite modernist gem, a residential home drawing on Japanese vernacular and religious architecture. The Umbrella House, built in Tokyo in 1961, is the smallest residential home designed by Japanese architect and mathematician Kazuo Shinohara.
This short publication chronicles the Umbrella House's long journey, with beautiful graphics incorporating impressions from 1960s Japan, architectural ideas and plans, and images showing its breakdown and reassembly at its new location. Texts by Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Shin-ichi Okuyama, and David B. Stewart analyze the Umbrella House in the context of Japanese architectural discourse from 1960 to the present.
