Tips (CARPET Maintenance)

  1. Fluff the Tuft
  2. Learn the right way to clean carpet.
  3. Always follow the carpet manufacturer's care instructions to ensure that your carpet looks beautiful and stays in good condition as long as possible.
  4. Vacuum regularly to remove dust and dirt and keep the pile in good condition. Carpets need to be vacuumed once a week and more often in areas of heavy traffic. Ideally, go over each area eight times, but fewer will do if you are in a hurry. Also, clean around the edges of each room and under furniture.
  5. Apply carpet shampoo with hand to dirty patches. When the whole carpet is dirty, shampoo it using a machine, or call a professional cleaner. For a cheaper alternative, sprinkle bicarbonate soda all over to freshen your carpet. Leave for 15 minutes, and then vacuum thoroughly for a clear, odourless carpet.
  6. To prevent carpet beetles, sprinkle laundry borax around the carpet edges, and also over the underlay before a new carpet is laid.
  7. Put a bowl of water in a discreet place if you are expecting smoking visitors. Lightings candles also help. Line the bottoms of ashtrays with baking soda to prevent butts from smouldering.
  8. A small container of vinegar left in any room of the house keeps the room smelling fresh, even if the house is closed up for a while. Add vinegar to the water in humidifiers occasionally, it will keep the air fresher. Finally, prevent carpets from sliding on hard floor surfaces by sticking pieces of heavy-duty, double-sided tape around the edges.
  9. Recipe for Homemade Carpet Freshener:
    - 1 cup crushed, dried herbs (rosemary, southernwood, and lavender are good choices)
    - 1 teaspoon ground cloves
    - 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    - 1 teaspoon baking soda
  10. Combine ingredients, and sprinkle over carpet. Allow to sit for a few minutes, and then vacuum.
  11. Other variations:
    - Mix 1 small box baking soda with your favorite potpourri oil, using just a few drops, and sprinkle on as carpet freshener. Leave on a carpet for 10 to 20 minutes, then vacuum.
    - Use 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup cornstarch, and 15 drops essential oil fragrance. Leave on carpet 10 - 20 minutes, and then vacuum. Store mixture in glass jar or airtight containers.

HOW TO REMOVE FURNITURE MARKS ON CARPET

  • Damp carpet: if you need to replace furniture before a recently shampooed carpet is fully dry, place squares of foil beneath the furniture from marking the carpet.
  • Raising crushed pile: to raise indentations in carpet caused by the weight of heavy furniture, place an ice cube in the dent, and leave the ice cube to melt. Let the area dry naturally, then vacuum.
